Engineering plastic

Material Characteristics
MC NYLON
  • Excellent mechanical strength, most commonly used engineering plastic
  • Good oil resistance
  • Manufacturable in relatively large sizes due to liquid mixing process
  • Relatively high water absorption compared to other engineering plastics, making it prone to expansion changes
POM
  • Low water absorption, good strength, and excellent fatigue resistance for a well-balanced material
  • Good machinability, with reinforced annealed products having minimal distortion during processing
  • Recommended for material selection due to its versatility
UHMW
  • Exhibits excellent slip and wear resistance at room temperature and low loads
  • Good chemical resistance and suitable for components in contact with water, often used in food-related applications
  • Low hardness, susceptible to scratches, high linear expansion coefficient, and significant shrinkage
PA
  • High tensile strength and rupture strength
  • Durable and water-absorbent even at low and high temperatures
  • Good thermal formability, and excellent in strength, oil resistance, and low-temperature characteristics
PC
  • Well-balanced mechanical properties, good dimensional accuracy, and excellent dimensional stability due to low water absorption
  • High impact resistance and very good electrical characteristics
  • Weak against steam and chemicals, prone to cracking
  • Thin sheets can be free-cut
PBT
  • Tough with high rigidity, excellent heat aging resistance
  • Low water absorption and excellent electrical characteristics
  • Resistant to acids but weak against alkalis, susceptible to hydrolysis

Super engineering plastic

Material Characteristics
PSF
PEEK
  • Excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, and radiation resistance; the most commonly used super engineering plastic
  • Almost no leachables, suitable for wafer carriers due to weldability
PAI
  • Superior mechanical properties and durability at high temperatures, low linear expansion coefficient leading to minimal shrinkage
  • Flame retardant with a wide usage temperature range
  • Swells with water absorption, leading to expansion with moisture or water exposure
PES
PPS
  • Excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability (virtually zero water absorption, low linear expansion coefficient)
  • Weldable, used in items that don't require the performance of PEEK
PTFE
  • Superior heat resistance, chemical resistance, friction characteristics, electrical properties, and corrosion resistance; used in various fields such as food and semiconductor industries
  • High linear expansion coefficient and significant shrinkage, leading to poor dimensional stability
  • Excellent coefficient of friction (good slip characteristics) but susceptible to scratches
PCTFE
  • Fluororesin with excellent gas barrier properties, particularly low water vapor transmission rate among plastics
  • Slightly lower heat and chemical resistance compared to PTFE and PFA, but excellent dimensional stability and mechanical properties at low temperatures
PEI
  • Maintains high strength at high temperatures, excellent electrical properties
  • Moderate wear resistance, prone to chipping
PVDF
  • Superior mechanical properties among fluororesins
  • Flame retardant, weather resistance, radiation resistance
  • High heat resistance, excellent chemical resistance and compliance with food hygiene laws, widely used in welding tanks and various components
PFA
  • Maintains mechanical strength within a wide range of -200°C to 260°C, stable for use
  • Higher hardness compared to PTFE, good scratch resistance, excellent dimensional stability
ECTFE
FEP
PI
  • Superior heat resistance compared to PAI. Excellent mechanical properties and durability at high temperatures, high purity makes it suitable for harsh conditions in semiconductor, LCD, aerospace, and space industries
  • Highly priced material, second only to PBI

General purpose plastic

Material Characteristics
PVC Inexpensive among resins, excellent in adhesive, welding, and bending processability; good chemical resistance (especially acid resistance), low water absorption Used in semiconductor components, housings, etc. Low heat resistance; susceptible to deformation when left in a car during summer
PE Excellent corrosion resistance and electrical insulation properties; general-purpose plastic Low water absorption; compliant with food hygiene laws; widely used in food machinery due to low cost Good surface slip properties, but low hardness leads to susceptibility to scratching
PET Excellent mechanical properties and dimensional stability; used in high-precision products and food machinery components Two types: A-PET, G-PET; G-PET (transparent) allows bending and adhesive processing Weak to impact, prone to chipping
PP Excellent corrosion resistance and electrical insulation properties; general-purpose plastic; harder than PE and relatively high heat resistance High chemical resistance; widely used in semiconductor-related components
PS
ABS Inexpensive; superior surface hardness and impact resistance compared to PP and PE Easy secondary processing such as adhesion and plating; high demand for prototyping and modeling Slightly inferior chemical resistance, susceptible to solvents like thinner
PMMA High transparency; clarity increases after polishing post-cutting; often used for decorative and prototype items Strong acid resistance, weak to other chemicals, prone to cracks; susceptible to cracking and other weaknesses
